New Jersey hotel begins second phase of $15M upgrade

The 244-room Marriott Saddle Brook, N.J., is in the second phase of a $15 million renovation. The historic hotel, less than 20 miles from midtown Manhattan, completed phase one in July. With phase one of the renovation complete, the hotel now features new guestrooms, meeting spaces, ballroom and fitness center.

The Marriott Saddle Brook is the second oldest Marriott currently operating in the system. Originally built in 1967, the updated design reflects both the hotel’s significance within the Marriott brand and the property’s connection to the local area. The hotel’s redesign was handled by hospitality interior design firm DiLeonardo.

The redesign draws inspiration from the exterior, the three-dimensional massing, the grid façade and the undulating floor plates. Elements of the redesign in public spaces and guestrooms integrate geometric elements with features like strong guiding lines and intersecting patterns. Versions of these patterns can be seen in the guestroom artwork, a nod to the geometry and light reflection in the building's architecture.

The variety of reflections and transparency within the lobby give a nod to the natural surroundings captured by the building's glazing, which creates a shifting display of light and color.

The exterior has been painted in a color palette of slate gray and neutral tones. A full refurbishment of the parking lot incorporates refreshed the landscaping with trees, shrubs and flowering plants.

Guestrooms and Fitness Center Revamped

All 244 guestrooms, including three suites, have been completely redesigned. The new guestrooms have a soft, warm color palette while modern furnishings provide functional comfort. Decor elements incorporate the hotel’s urban roots and a sense of place, with headboard art that evokes the muted glow of sunset and artwork with patterns inspired by its geometric exterior.

The refurbished fitness center, with upgraded flooring and walls, is located on the first floor. Newly installed equipment includes elliptical machines, exercise bikes, weight machines, free weights and more.

The Atrium and Meeting Spaces

The 7,200 square feet of redesigned indoor gathering spaces includes six meeting rooms named after nearby counties in New Jersey and the 300-guest Grand Ballroom. An additional 4,700 square feet of seasonal outdoor space is flexible for a variety of events.

The newly built atrium has natural light, with a carpet pattern and color scheme inspired by the blue tones and the sky as seen through glass ceiling panels. This space formerly was the pool area.

Phase Two Renovations in 2025

Phase two will include a rebuild of the Marriott M Club, a new restaurant and a recreation of the greatroom lobby space. The phase is scheduled to be completed in early 2025.
