San Antonio’s historic Gunter Hotel has reopened following a $57 million renovation, which marks the first phase of a full restoration of the 116-year-old property.
The downtown landmark—originally opened in 1909—is now part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Tribute Portfolio, a collection of more than 160 hotels worldwide. The updated Gunter Hotel features 311 guest rooms, including 30 suites and 14 ADA-compliant rooms, along with a rooftop pool, 24/7 fitness center and 20,000 sq. feet of meeting space.
Public spaces and select guest rooms are now open, including the hotel’s signature restaurant, Jots, and the Keystone Club bar. The remaining venues, including Bar 414—a speakeasy named for the room where blues legend Robert Johnson recorded in 1936—will open later this year. A new recording studio and a Paris Baguette café are also slated to debut in the coming months.
The redesign by DLR Group preserves the building’s Beaux-Arts character while adding modern touches. Each guest room includes a record player and a copy of Johnson’s first album, with access to a curated vinyl collection in the lobby. A “Vinyl Ambassador” is available to assist guests with selections.
Phased openings at the Gunter will continue through 2025.
