Grenada resort launches renovation

In Grenada, the Mount Cinnamon Beach Resort is getting a new look. The resort, which is associated with the West Indies School of Hospitality, has employed local architect Irina Kostka to redesign the restaurant, bar, pool and lounge within the main resort building. The resort will close for the month of September for the renovations, which also include soft updates to the Hacienda Suites and Villas, before reopening the first week of October.

The brief to Kostka was to create spaces that combine sophistication with a sense of place. Owner Barry Collymore wanted the design to encourage social interaction and promote comfort. To that end, Kostka will add a 360-degree bar while the pool area will get lounge styling and a floating stage for an increased entertainment program as well as a new speciality coffee shop.

The sense of place will come through bright color accents on an otherwise neutral palette as well as Grenadian and Caribbean artwork, much of which will celebrate farmers and suppliers.

The main restaurant, which will be renamed ahead of reopening, will serve Caribbean-inspired, farm-to-table cuisine.

“We are investing significant resources in this upgrade to Mount Cinnamon Beach Resort because of the confidence I have in the Grenada tourism industry,” Collymore said in a statement. “I am very optimistic about the future of Grenada as a top Caribbean, luxury and family friendly destination. The building is still almost in its original form from the 1980s and the focus for this project is to put a modern spin on the design, which will accentuate the character of the building rather than erase it. We want our guests to enjoy an authentic Caribbean experience and that will continue to come across in the new design. ... Sustainability and community are also very important to the resort and we are using local architects, contractors and many local materials where possible in the renovations.”

Mount Cinnamon Beach Resort has 36 hillside suites and villas and access to a three-kilometer white sand beach. It is Green Globe-certified and the Caribbean’s first UN Global Compact Network Member. Amenities include the Cinnamon Spa, a new beachside wellness deck, a yoga studio, a Peloton gym, Dive Grenada facility, tennis court, beach volleyball court, croquet, shuffleboard, giant garden chess and table tennis.
