California island hotel reopens after renovation

Catalina Island Co., a resort operator on California’s Catalina Island, has reopened the historic Pavilion Hotel in Avalon following a renovation.

"The Pavilion Hotel [is] part of Avalon's cultural fabric," Hunter Rusack, president and COO of Catalina Island Co., said in a statement. "Our role as the oldest and largest hospitality company on the island is to preserve the character that makes Catalina special while ensuring these spaces evolve for today's travelers. This renovation honors the property's midcentury heritage and social legacy as a gathering place, while positioning Pavilion Hotel to welcome the next generation of Avalon visitors."

Originally the Dance Pavilion in the late 1800s, the waterfront site has been part of Catalina's social and cultural history for more than a century. The updated design includes classic silhouettes with botanical accents and misty coastal hues. Some accommodations have French doors and private patios overlooking the hotel's central courtyard. Wine dispensers in the lobby offer guests an easy way to sample a curated selection of wines.

The open-air courtyard has chaise lounge chairs and a fire pit. The Lanai serves breakfast each morning.

Catalina Island Co.’s portfolio includes Mt Ada, Hotel Atwater and Banning House Lodge & Villas.
