Every great hospitality experience starts with people who care, and that begins with a culture that cares for them. Hotel companies everywhere talk about being “people-first,” but the organizations that truly live it go beyond slogans. They design systems and behaviors that turn those words into daily reality.
Here are my top key strategies hotel operators can use to bring their culture to life.
1. Define Your Purpose, and Make It Personal
A clear purpose anchors your culture. The strongest purpose statements connect directly to associates, guests and owners. These are the three pillars of most hotel organizations. Whether it’s “to care for each other” or “to make travel better,” your purpose should feel authentic and actionable.
Pair it with a simple set of values that reflect your unique DNA. Values like Drive to Win, Deliver with Passion, or Own the Outcome all encourage performance, but the key is ensuring every associate knows what those values look like in action.
2. Build Leadership Habits That Reinforce Culture
Culture thrives when leaders model it daily. Consider creating a leadership “playbook” that outlines expectations and rhythms for engagement: hiring, employee resource groups, one-on-one conversations, purposeful property walks, and monthly “rallies” that celebrate wins and clarify goals.
Consistency builds trust, and trust builds culture.
3. Replace Reviews with Conversations
Traditional performance reviews are fading fast in hospitality. Instead, leading hotel companies are adopting frequent “check-in” conversations. These short, meaningful discussions focus on goals, development and support, helping associates feel seen and valued.
The result? Higher engagement and faster course corrections.
4. Grow Future Leaders from Within
A culture of development sends a clear message: “We believe in you.” Identify high-potential associates and prepare them for the next step with rotational assignments or leadership development programs.
When employees can see a clear path forward, they’re more likely to stay, and to grow with you.
5. Recognize, Celebrate, Repeat
Recognition is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to reinforce culture. Quarterly awards, surprise celebrations, and unique incentives like travel experiences or wellness stipends can keep morale high.
The key is authenticity. Recognition that feels personal, timely and connected to company values multiplies its impact.
6. Listen, Learn, and Adapt
Regular engagement surveys and open communication tools help leaders understand what’s working and where improvement is needed. What matters most is follow-up; acting on what associates share.
People-first cultures are built through continuous feedback and evolution, not one-time initiatives.
At its core, hospitality is human. When you put people first – and back that promise with real systems and behaviors – you don’t just create happier employees. You create a stronger business that delivers better experiences for everyone it serves.
