Raines announced the opening of The Lantern Columbia, S.C., a boutique hotel created from an adaptive reuse of the former Columbia Central Fire Station.
Located in Columbia's Vista neighborhood, the 59-room hotel was developed by Raines Development and is part of Raines’ Woven portfolio of lifestyle hotels. Located near the South Carolina State Capitol and the University of South Carolina campus, the property spans three historic buildings.
The hotel incorporates an employment model developed in partnership with the University of South Carolina’s College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management and the CarolinaLIFE program. The collaboration is designed to provide career opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities alongside hospitality students and industry professionals.
“The Lantern Columbia represents the future of what we call ‘intentional hospitality,’” David Tart, managing partner at Florenca, S.C.-based Raines, said in a statement. “We’ve taken a cherished local landmark and transformed it into a space that serves both guests and the community in truly remarkable ways. The collaboration between seasoned hospitality veterans, future hospitality leaders and the students from CarolinaLIFE creates an atmosphere of genuine warmth that is unlike anything else in the market.”
Architecture on the project was led by Garvin Design Group, with construction by Mashburn Construction. The design retains elements of the building’s original firehouse identity while incorporating contemporary interiors influenced by mid-century modern design and local references.
Food and beverage operations are anchored by Ladder 13, the hotel’s on-site restaurant and bar. The concept features Mediterranean-influenced cuisine with regional elements
The hotel is led by general manager Rick Hayduk, who brings more than 35 years of hospitality experience. Hayduk previously served as opening general manager of The Shepherd Hotel in Clemson, S.C., where he partnered with the ClemsonLIFE program to implement a similar employment model.
“The Lantern Columbia’s guest experience is defined by the unique culture we are building within these historic walls. Our ambition is to have guests of The Lantern and the patrons of Ladder 13 leave inspired, aside from having an incredible stay or dining experience,” added Hayduk.
