Curio Collection hotel opens in San Antonio's Hemisfair District

The Monarch San Antonio has opened in the city's Hemisfair District as part of the Curio Collection by Hilton.

The 17-story, $185 million downtown property is owned and operated by San Antonio, Texas-based Zachry Hospitality. Located near the River Walk and the Alamo, the newly opened luxury hotel—with design inspired by the monarch butterflies that migrate through the region each year—is designed by locally based Overland Partners with interiors by Chicago, Ill.-based The Gettys Group and KBAA.

“We’re proud to introduce The Monarch as a hotel that reflects the Zachry family’s long-standing connection to San Antonio and their belief in its future,” Rick Slutter, managing director of Zachry Hospitality, said in a statement. “This site carries deep significance for the family, and we approached it with a sense of responsibility to honor what has stood here before while contributing something lasting to the city’s next chapter.”

“The Monarch builds upon that momentum with its unforgettable design ethos, world-class dining and elevated offerings that are core to the Curio Collection experience,” added Brooke Thomas, brand leader, Curio Collection by Hilton.

The Monarch has 200 guestrooms, including 28 suites. Filled with natural light and overlooking the adjacent park, accommodations look to pair well-considered layouts with curated comforts, including Sferra Italian linens, blackout curtains, ergonomic workspaces and Platinum Vertuo Nespresso coffee machines. Bathrooms feature textural finishes and a calming earth-toned palette, complemented by Texas-based Niven Morgan bath products.

Within the interiors, sculptural forms and open-air spaces are designed to reflect metamorphosis, with each floor symbolizing a stage in the butterfly’s journey from emergence to flight. High arches lead into a lobby defined by vertical wood ribbons rising across the ceilings. Gentle curves, layered textures and luminous waterfall lighting create a sense of motion, complemented by a floating staircase and sculptural details.

Executive chef Jae H. Lee leads the hotel’s culinary program. Oak & Amber is the hotel’s signature restaurant located just off the lobby, while Aleteo is the rooftop restaurant and bar above downtown and drawing inspiration from Yucatán cuisine.

Wellness offerings include a full-service spa with four treatment rooms, hydrothermal experiences, couples’ treatments and botanical therapies. The spa options also include infrared sauna sessions, IV vitamin drips and cold plunges. A 550-sq.-foot fitness studio features Reaxing neuroactive training equipment.

The hotel also has 15,000 square feet of flexible event space, including eight venues and the 5,000-square-foot Meridian Ballroom, all located on a single floor with natural light and state-of-the-art technology. Anchoring both the hotel and surrounding park, La Mariposa is a $2 million public art installation designed to become a defining symbol of downtown San Antonio.
