Former California Sheraton reopens as Hotel Solea

The 201-room Hotel Solea has opened in Carlsbad, Calif., following a repositioning of the former Sheraton Carlsbad Resort.

The lifestyle property has undergone a multimillion-dollar transformation and now is part of the Autograph Collection within Marriott International’s Marriott Bonvoy portfolio. The redesigned hotel looks to introduce a boutique-inspired, botanical retreat blending design-forward coastal living with Southern California charm.

The opening coincides with the seasonal bloom of The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch and the debut of LEGO Galaxy Land at LEGOLAND California, which guests can access directly through the hotel’s private park entrance. The property also shares a campus with The Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa.

“Hotel Solea embodies our vision of effortless sophistication: a design-forward retreat that reflects the beauty and vibrancy of Carlsbad while delivering the elevated experiences guests expect from Marriott Bonvoy’s Autograph Collection,” John Gates, vp, operations, Hotel Solea, said in a statement. “This opening marks an exciting new chapter not only for our property, but for Carlsbad as a whole.”

Inspired by Carlsbad’s coastal landscape and botanical heritage, the hotel's design incorporates natural woods, woven textures, soft stone finishes and greenery. Floor-to-ceiling windows, terraces and curated art elements are designed to create a contemporary Southern California aesthetic.

The property has 201 guestrooms and suites, many with private balconies overlooking the coast or nearby attractions. Amenities include a pool and lounge areas, a fitness center and access to the Ocean Pearl Spa at neighboring The Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa. Landscaped outdoor spaces throughout the resort provide areas designed for relaxation and wellness.

Hotel Solea’s culinary centerpiece is Verise, a modern Italian restaurant inspired by the cuisine of Central Italy and the Adriatic coast. Additional dining options include poolside fare featuring wood-fired specialties and seasonal salads, as well as Caffe Al Volo, serving coffee, pastries and local provisions.

The hotel also introduces approximately 70,000 square feet of meeting and event space, including an 8,010-square-foot ballroom, more than 20 breakout rooms, a grand lawn and multiple terraces.
